Chapter Twelve

In the car, my mind bounced between the dead girls and The Council wanting the tree back. Although the visions the tree gave me were helping with the current situation, I felt a little thrill at the idea of being rid of it. I hadn’t wanted it. The Council could take my immortality, the balancing of life and death, the responsibility, and I could go back to normal. Or as normal as my life ever was. I just needed it a little longer until we figured out who on The Council was guilty.

We were halfway home when Quin’s phone rang, disrupting my thoughts. When he answered, Felix’s voice came through the audio system in the car.

“Felix,” Quin greeted him.

“Hey, Quin. I got those medical records you wanted.”

Quin turned a corner and nodded at me. I told you he’d come through. “Great,” he said. “I can swing by and pick them up tomorrow.”

“There’s a catch,” Felix added, and I clutched the edge of my seat, waiting for the bomb to drop. “I need you here now.”

“Can it wait?” Quin asked, but he pulled off into a spot along the dark street and put the car in park. “I was just headed home for the night.”

“It’s Tristan,” Felix said, like the name explained everything.

“Fuck.” Quin threw his head back against the headrest and sighed. “How bad is it this time?”

“Well, I haven’t seen him yet, but from what I hear…bad. I hate to hold those records over your head, but—”

“You know all you have to do is ask. It’s going to take me half an hour to get there. He better not die before then.” Quin pulled the car back onto the road and did an illegal U-turn. I grumbled quietly in my seat. I had hoped to go home and go to bed, but I perked up at what Felix said next.

“Bring your girlfriend and that tree of hers.” The call ended.

Quin muttered a string of expletives under his breath before I interrupted him. “Am I supposed to know what any of that means?” I was tiring of all the secret shifter business Quin never fully explained when I needed to know what was going on.

He slammed his palm into the steering wheel and I startled at his sudden temper, but then he inhaled deeply and exhaled his anger until it was a tense simmer.

“Tristan was Felix’s best friend. I don’t know if that’s still the case, not after the fights they had. See, Felix has seven younger sisters,” he began. “The oldest, Liana, is Tristan’s ‘one who got away,’ but he’s a fucking hothead, so instead of letting her go, he stirs up shit with her husband and his pack once in a while. Fucking idiot.” He gritted his teeth and beat the steering wheel more gently this time. “I swear he’s got a death wish.”

“You think he’s hurt?” I pressed my hand against my chest, against the pressure where I carried the tree.

“Felix wouldn’t have asked for you if it wasn’t serious.
